It's set to be one of the most significant selection decisions of the entire Ashes series.

The Australians look set to leave out spearhead Mitchell Starc for the first Ashes Test against England starting tonight, instead opting for a pace trio of Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and Josh Hazlewood.

This comes despite Starc's form, taking 10 wickets in his last Test against Canberra and breaking the record for most wickets taken in a World Cup in England already.

Triple M's own Adam Gilchrist joined Kennedy Molloy on Wednesday arvo to preview the series, with Mick Molloy pressing the question about whether Starc would play.

"I was suggesting to you I thought Mitchell Starc would play. You think not?" he asked.

Gilly said the word was Starc wouldn't play - and explained the reason why that decision was being made.
