Commuters are in for a bit of a difficult trip home this afternoon, following a police operation in the Footscray area.

The Sunbury Line has been suspended, with buses replacing trains between North Melbourne and Sunshine due to a police request at the station.

Twenty buses have been called in to help get commuters around, however there are reports that they may take over an hour to arrive.

Anyone heading to Footscray is advised to take Werribee or Williamstown line services.

It is understood that there have been reports of a suspicious package at the station.
